Calf Roping

Calf Roping is easy to explain, fun to watch and hard to do. The roper nods for his calf to be released and time starts once the calf crosses the score line. A well-trained horse "rates" the calf (positions himself correctly behind the calf) and must hold that position regardless of the calf's movements. The ride makes his throw, instantly jerks his slack to close the loop and then "pitches his slack" to keep it out of the way of his mount. The roper steps off his horse, goes down the rope and "flanks" the calf. He then ties any three legs with a "piggin String" by putting the loop over a front leg, pushing the hind legs up and tying all three with two wraps and a "hooey". The fastest clocking wins this event.
