Break-a-way Roping, a "judges nightmare". A fast moving event patterned after regular calf roping. Time is flagged when the calf hits the end of the lariat rope and pops it loose from the saddle. After a contestant ropes the calf, the rope (tied with a string to the saddle horn) is released and a white flag on the end of the rope indicates to the judge the break has taken place. The field judge must instantly decide if the catch is legal. If he drops the flag and then realizes there has been an infraction, he's in trouble. Many professional rodeo judges would "rassle a bear than flag the girls' break-a-way roping".
